Opportunity for Doctors and health providers for a 2 year position in Honduras
Shoulder to Shoulder, a non denominational, NGO provides ongoing primary
medical, nursing and dental care as well as nutrition and public health
services to the undeserved population living in the most remote part of the
State of Intibucá, Honduras which is within a few kilometers of the El
Salvador border. We are currently looking for 2-4 providers to work in the
3,600 square foot Shoulder to Shoulder Clinic (Clinica Hombro a Hombro)
which has been in operation since 1995 and has five exam rooms, a
laboratory, a procedure room, x-ray equipment and ultrasound and a large
well-equipped pharmacy, dental clinic and internet. Many of the clinic's supplies and
medicines are donated. One Honduran physician and 3 North American
physicians are currently volunteering as medical missionaries, and provide
high quality round-the-clock medical care to the region. The two year
term will end the summer of 2008 for two of them. They cover emergencies
and OB on a rotational basis. Nurse practitioners, midwives, and doctors,
especially family physicians are currently needed. There are numerous
opportunities for teaching residents, medical students and nursing students who are short term volunteers with Shoulder to Shoulder.
Part of the work will include traveling to remote communities on a weekly basis, supervising other providers, managing public health projects, maintaining an inventory and working with local community health boards. The ability to see patients in Spanish is required.
Shoulder to Shoulder is a small non profit and is not able to pay the usual
physician, nurse practitioner, midwife salary. However we can provide free
housing, a cook and a $10,000 per year per full time employee stipend to
help defray costs and travel. For more information on our philosophy of our project, see a recent
article published in the STFM journal. Read it here
