Career and long term opportunities
Opportunity for health providers, public health, management and construction personnel for a 1-2 year positions in Honduras
Shoulder to Shoulder, a non denominational, NGO provides ongoing primary medical, nursing and dental care as well as nutrition and public health services to the undeserved population living in the most remote part of the region of Intibucá, Honduras, within a few kilometers of the El Salvador border. We have opportunities currently 2-4 medical providers to work in either our one of our 5500 square foot Shoulder to Shoulder Clinics (Clinicas Hombro a Hombro). One has been in operation since 1995 and has five exam rooms, a laboratory, a procedure room, x-ray equipment and ultrasound and a large well-equipped pharmacy, dental clinic and internet. The second is a new clinic with all the same facilities including digital radiography.
Honduran physicians are currently providing high quality round-the-clock medical care to the region. They cover emergencies and OB on a rotational basis. Nurse practitioners, midwives, and doctors (especially family physicians) are currently needed. There are numerous opportunities for teaching residents, medical students and nursing students who are short term volunteers with Shoulder to Shoulder. Part of the work will include traveling to remote communities on a weekly basis, supervising other providers, managing public health projects, and working with local community health boards. The ability to see patients in Spanish is required.
Dentists are also needed to work along side and teach our two Honduran dentists in a modern dental clinic.
We have a modern medical information database that tracks all encounters with patients. It is a treasure trove of opportunity for public health intervention and epidemiological investigation.
Business administrators are needed. We have grown from 4 employees to over 120 in just the last 8 years. Teaching business administration including accounting and finance, project management and human resources is vitally needed.
Understanding the local culture, customs, and processes often take many months before a new person can begin to be effective in making needed changes. Commitments of at least 1 year assure that your time in Honduras will be productive for both you and the local people. Our goal is to make your time in Honduras not only beneficial to the people we serve, but also in building your personal skills and experiences.
Shoulder to Shoulder is a small non profit and is not able to pay the usual professional salaries. However we can provide free housing, a cook and a small stipend to help defray costs and travel.
