"We exist to serve the poor"
Shoulder to Shoulder has been working in the Intibucá Honduras for more than 20 years working with communities to reduce poverty through programs in health, education, nutrition and environmental hygiene. A short-term relationship (an isolated medical brigade, for instance) has little if any, long-term impact on health status or community stability. A long-term sustainable relationship opens possibilities for continuity of care, health promotion and disease prevention. Ongoing, dedicated, consent rated and unwavering commitment to one area has made tremendous improvements in overall health and well being of our service area.
Core Programs:
- Health Care: We operate two “minihospitals” with maternity care, lab, x-ray, dental care and 24 hour emergency care in Honduras and 9 other smaller clinics. Ecuador and Tanzania each operate one clinic. Operations in Honduras are in partnership with the Ministry of Health as they seek to decentralize health services.
- Nutrition: We collaborate with World Vision, Cosepradi and the World Food Program to provide school age feeding programs to over 2000 children.. We partner with the Mathile Institute for Human Nutrition to provide supplementation to children under five and conduct nutrition research.
- Education: Shoulder to Shoulder is collaborating with the Bilingual School of La Ceiba, the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cincinnati Ohio and the Municipality of Concepcion to establish a bilingual school
- Literacy: The Library of the Frontier in Santa Lucia, Intibuca is an after school and vacation program for school age children
- Scholarship: We provide over 100 scholarships annually for poor children to attend secondary school
- Empowerment: Yo Puedo enables primary age girls to learn leadership skills through entrepreneurship
- Research: We have managed over $1m in research support for nutrition, child health care, respiratory illnesses, including NIH funded projects
- Data Management: Intibuca has an integrated database. It includes census data, GPS coordinates for all homes, International Classification for Primary Care (ICPC) coding for all clinic visits, field visits and research data. It is a gold mine for outcomes based research.
- Global Health Education: Over 400 volunteers visit each year with a preponderance of medical students, family medicine residents and faculty

Digital Imaging Delivers Modern Medicine to the Developing World
Imaging Technology News: February 23, 2010 - Before opening the doors of a new medical clinic in a remote region of Honduras, Dr. Jeffrey E. Heck, founder of the sponsoring NGO Shoulder to Shoulder said, “It’s important to offer the same services here as if it were a clinic in the United States.”
Dr. Heck’s vision became a reality when he installed a suite of digital radiology and telemedicine equipment in a new clinic designed to serve a resource-poor community of 30,000 plus inhabitants in the town of Concepcion in Intibuca, Honduras. Read more ...
