Major Quake Strikes Honduras
A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Honduras on May 28th, damaging buildings and killing at least six people. The 7.1-Magnitude quake, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, was reportedly felt as far away as Cancun, Mexico. A number of the quake's victims were killed in home collapses, though one man in the coastal town of Tela died of an apparent heart attack. Honduras' largest port, Puerto Cortes, was temporarily shut down due to damaged machinery and equipment but reopened shortly afterward, and in El Progreso one of two bridges connecting San Pedro Sula to the rest of the country collapsed. The area that Shoulder to Shoulder serves was unaffected by the quake.

Poor Suffer Most In Global Downturn

The current global economic slowdown is being felt most strongly in the homes of the world's poor. As job opportunities dwindle and already tight food budgets for families are stretched even further, the recession hits hardest those who can least afford it. And poor families aren't the only ones feeling the pinch. The recession is also hurting the organizations that serve them, with many government programs and non-profit organizations critically short on funds at a time when their work is most needed. Please keep in mind that Shoulder to Shoulder's needs are greatest when it is most difficult for our supporters to donate.

You Have To Be Rich To Be Poor

That's the conclusion from this article from the Washington Post detailing the high cost of living in poverty. "The poorer you are, the more things cost. More in money, time, hassle, exhaustion, menace. This is a fact of life that reality television and magazines don't often explain. So we'll explain it here. Consider this a primer on the economics of poverty."
